Writing Creative Nonfiction
ENGL 162 FA
This course offers practice in a variety of nonfiction forms, including the narrative essay, profile, and memoir. Students are invited to write nonfiction narratives, profiles, memoir, family sketches, reviews,
commentary,
travel pieces, or other forms of literary nonfiction, shaping the assignments to suit their own interests. The readings serve as models for these exercises, suggesting a range of designs and voices the student writer
might
try.
MAJOR READINGS
Readings include selections from BEST AMERICAN ESSAYS, BEST AMERICAN TRAVEL WRITING, and BEST...SCIENCE WRITING and pieces by such writers as Annie Dillard, George Orwell, Joan Didion, Philip Gourevitch, William
Finnegan, Michael Ondaatje, Anne Fadiman,
Chang-rae Lee, Pico Iyer, and W.G. Sebald.
EXAMINATIONS AND ASSIGNMENTS
Weekly writing assignments.
ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS and/or COMMENTS
The course meets twice a week. One meeting is devoted to discussion of the readings and to questions of form and style. In the second meeting, students work in small groups and edit work-in-progress.
