Analytical Techniques in Geochemistry
E&ES 513 SP

An introduction to the principles and applications of chemical analyses of sediment and water samples. The theoretical background to X-ray diffraction analysis (XRD), X-ray fluorescence analysis (XRF), Atomic Absorption Spectroscopy (AAS), Ion Chromatography (IC) and Gas Chromatography (GC) will be treated in lectures. Water and mud samples from the Long Island Sound coastal region will be analyzed on all available equipment during projects for small groups of students. A written report on the analytical techniques and data interpretation is required at the end of the course. A good background is required in Geology (E&ES101) and in Chemistry (CHEM141/142 or CHEM 143/144). Environmental Geochemistry (E&ES280) should be taken concurrently or must have been taken already.

Only for students with an interest in geochemistry and pollution studies. Unless preregistered students attend the first class meeting or communicate directly with the instructor prior to the first class, they will be dropped from the class list. NOTE: Students must still submit a completed Drop/Add form to the Registrar's Office.
