Bharata Natyam II: Embracing the Traditional and the Modern
DANC 362 FA
This course will focus on gaining an understanding of the juxtaposition of the classicism of Bharatanatyam against its vaious manifestation in post modern culture. We will foster an understanding of the role, function,
and imaging of Bharatanatyam dance in its traditional and contemporary contexts. The course assumes no prior knowledge of Bharatanatyam and assumes no prior facility and study of any movement language above its
introductory
level. We will focus mainly on studio participation, preparing students as performers and scholars.

EXAMINATIONS AND ASSIGNMENTS
Class participation combined with readings, discussions and videoviewings and short research paper. This course will be based on:
50% Attendance/Participation
30% Class Journal/short essays
20% Short Research
paper
ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS and/or COMMENTS
Student will perform in the Worlds of Dance Concert at end of semester. There is a course fee for costume materials.
