Barbarian Chieftains to Knights of Chivalry

This course will study the development of the behavioral codes of the ruling class of medieval society from the period of Germanic conquest through the high middle ages and the phase of crusading expansion. The course will draw on both literary and historiographical sources and will focus on the transformation of and the potential contradictions between the various values imbedded in the codes inherent in these texts. The readings will include a Norse saga, BEOWULF, THE SONG OF ROLAND, the NIBELUNGENLIED, and versions of the Perceval and Tristan stories as well as selections from Gregory of Tours, Einhard, Otto von Freising, Joinville, and Villehardouin.

EXAMINATIONS AND ASSIGNMENTS

Papers, no final examinations.
