Refiguring the Body
COL 212 SP
Western thought has traditionally ignored or devalued the body in accounts of subjectivity. Over the last century, however, there has been increasing recognition of the crucial role it plays in relation to perception,
cognition,
action, and being. In this course we will trace the epistemological shift by exploring a range of foundational phenomenological, psychoanalytic, genealogical, neurological, and feminist theories of embodied
subjectivity.
MAJOR READINGS
Readings may be drawn from (but are not limited to) the following: Merleau-Ponty, Freud, Lacan, Sacks, Nietzshe, Foucault, Deleuze, Kristeva, Irigaray, Braidotti, Butler, and Grosz.
