Drugs and Disease

This course will cover the basic chemistry and molecular biology of several diseases and the drugs used to treat them. Topics will include AIDS, cancer, bacterical infections and psychotherapeutic drugs. The origins of the diseases, the historical development of drug treatments, and the most current treatments available will be presented. Original scientific data will be discussed to analyze the requirements of a reliable scientific study. The classes will be divided between lecture and discussion. Previous secondary school courses in chemistry and biology are required. This course is designed for nonscience majors.
