Principles of Biology II: Eukaryotic Genetics and Developmental Biology
BIOL 206 SP

Crosslistings:
MB&B 206

This course may be repeated for credit.

A continuation of BIOL205, this course will begin with transmission genetics including linkage, recombinational mapping, and chromosomal aberrations. We will then introduce the foundations of the current revolution in molecular genetics and genome analysis, discussing human gene mapping and developmental genetics. The second half of the course will use the foundation of cell biology and genetics to introduce the development of multicellular organisms. We will address the question of how cells develop and maintain different identities and functions in different tissues, beginning with gametogenesis and fertilization and proceeding through gastrulation and organogenesis.

MAJOR READINGS

Klug and Cummings, GENETICS: A MOLECULAR APPROACH
Additional readings TBA

EXAMINATIONS AND ASSIGNMENTS

Three 1-hour exams and one final examination; problem sets and writing assignment.

ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS and/or COMMENTS

Students must take BIOL206 and BIOL216 concurrently. You must sign up for each course separately. Students, especially those intending to major in biology, should have taken or be taking chemistry. Students planning to major in biology, neuroscience and behavior, or molecular biology and biochemistry and students who are planning to apply to medical school are strongly advised to take the course for a letter grade.
