Introduction to Astronomical Techniques
ASTR 211 SP

This course introduces some basic techniques of observational astronomy. The student will become familiar with the use of telescopes and instruments of Van Vleck Observatory, as well as acquiring basic knowledge about the sky. Acquisition and analysis of basic astronomical data will be stressed, including statistical and computer skills, techniques, and computer modeling. Topics covered will include celestial coordinates, time, catalogs and atlases,computer-assisted data analysis, telescopes and optics, photometry, and imaging. The course will stress the application of techniques learned in lecture through observing and computer exercises.

One textbook, several technical manuals.

EXAMINATIONS AND ASSIGNMENTS

Two exams (midterm, final), weekly observing exercises or problem sets.

ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS and/or COMMENTS

This course is one of two gateway courses for the Astronomy major (with ASTR155) but ASTR155 is not a required prerequisite for ASTR211. However, some prior knowledge of basic astronomy is required, roughly at the level of descriptive non-majors courses such as ASTR107 (The Universe), ASTR105 (Descriptive Astronomy), or ASTR103 (The Planets). Consult with the instructor if you are uncertain whether you have the necessary background. Knowledge of a computer programming language is not required in advance; IDL will be taught. Schedule flexibility to take advantage of clear nights is necessary.
