African History and Art
ARHA 299 SP
In this introduction to the history and art of West Africa from the late first millenium A.D. to the colonial period, we will cover topics including the trans-Saharan trade, the origins of state formation, the spread of
Islam south of the Sahara, and the slave trade. We will integrate history with study of the architectural monuments of medieval West Africa including the Friday Mosque in Jenne and masquerades and rituals of West
Africa
up to the colonial period.
MAJOR READINGS
Curtin, Feierman, et. al. AFRICAN HISTORY Mark, THE WILD BULL AND THE SACRED FOREST Mcnaughton, THE MANDE BLACKSMITHS, plus selected journal articles.
EXAMINATIONS AND ASSIGNMENTS
One class trip to NY, one term paper (10 pp), mid-term and an essay exam at the end of the course
ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS and/or COMMENTS
Regular attendance mandatory. Attendance required on class trip. No foreign languages needed; French would be helpful.
