Academic Year 2003/2004
Introduction to Asian American Literature
AMST 262 FA
This course serves as a broad introduction to Asian American literature. Through close readings of key Asian American literary works, as well as works by emergent authors, we will ask what it means to be "Asian
American,"
how literary works "represent" these experiences and how the meaning of Asian American has changed by developments within the Asian American literary and political imagination. We will also examine how race, class,
gender
and sexuality inform the aesthetic and political dimensions of Asian American literature. In particular, we will address concerns about "authenticity," immigrant experiences and the positioning of Asian Americans as
perpetual
outsiders.
