Junior Colloquium: The Study of Material Culture
AMST 205 SP

In this colloquium students will gain a basic working knowledge of both the theoretical foundations of material culture studies and the practical application study of artifacts. Material culture is not a single discipline or analytical method. Rather it is an approach shared by scholars of many disciplines (notably art history, archeology, anthropology, folklore, and history) who study the beliefs-values, ideas, attitudes, and assumptions-of a particular community through fabricated objects, structures and spaces produced at all societal levels. Students will work at local sites and collections, and an original research project is required. Preference to American Studies juniors and seniors; non-majors in order of seniority.
