Novels by Winter, Gilroy and Hodge provide perspectives from an older generation of Caribbean-born writers publishing in English after 1960. Paule Marshall, Audre Lorde and other writers associated with the Black Women Writers Renaissance will be considered anew. The works of younger emigres to North America will broaden the exploration of language, geography and cultural hybridity. Readings include critical perspectives from Caribbean scholars.

Primary texts by: Michelle Cliff, Edwidge Danticat, Patricia Powell, Makeda Silvera, Dionne Brand, and others.
Critical texts by: Barbara Christian, VeVe Clark, M.J.A. Chancy, Selwin Cudjoe, Velma Pollard, Carole Boyce Davies, and others.

EXAMINATIONS AND ASSIGNMENTS

Short, weekly essays; midterm; final paper.
