This course will provide an overview and study of specific qualitative methodological topics in education research. Students will become familiar with contemporary issues in qualitative research, including reliability, validity and ethics. We will discuss the nature and purpose of various qualitative approaches, then explore a variety of specific fieldwork techniques and methods: interviewing, oral history, focus groups and observations. A central concern of the course is to explore the role of race in the discourse of qualitative research. We will raise important questions about the benefits and limitations of different racialized discourses and "systems of knowing" that have dehumanized African American communities and children. Students will become familiar with appropriate research design, data analysis, management, interpretation and display. Students will have an opportunity to do fieldwork on a small scale. By this I mean, students will practice data gathering and analytical skills in a series of assignments.
