This course familiarizes you with the basic contours of the black experience in the United States and exposes you to a series of African American texts of various forms of writing, including history, autobiography, political and educational theory, sociological analysis, and literature. Our primary concern in the course will be to examine various African American responses to and representations of the political and social conditions of America from the middle of the 19th century to the present.
