Academic Year 2001/2002
Socialism and Its Future
SOC 257 FA
This course is about the Left and its visions of socialism as an alternative to capitalism. The course will begin by critically engaging the writings of Marx and Engels on capitalism and socialism. We will then
consider the perspectives of several Left
critiques of the socialist experiments in Eastern Europe and the Third World, especially in the Caribbean and Central America. The course will end by considering the prospects for socialism in the post-Cold War era.
