Tolstoy
RUSS 252 FA

Crosslistings:
REES 252

A study of Tolstoy's life (1828-1910) and works, beginning with his autobiographical novel, CHILDHOOD (1852), including WAR AND PEACE (1869) and ANNA KARENINA (1877), and concluding with HADZHI MURAD (1904). Tolstoy's biography will be considered as it reflects social and cultural problems he encountered in his life and addressed in his fiction. His fiction will be read as innovative experiments in narrative prose and as his contribution to a dialogue with his contemporaries: Turgenev, Herzen, Dostoevsky, and Chekhov.
