A Garden Enclosed: Hebrew Poetry in Muslim
RELI 473 SP

Crosslistings:
FIST 277

Early in the 11th century, in Muslim Andalusia, a hybrid literary culture evolved that produced the greatest poetry postbiblical Hebrew literature has known. For a variety of reasons, this poetry has not made its way into the western canon. This course will introduce students to the major figures of that Golden Age of Hebrew Poetry and to the key cultural and philosophical questions they confronted. We will examine the Judeo-Arabic social context in which this poetry emerged, read substantial selections by the period's secular and religious poets, and explore some of the critical issues pertaining to the study and transmission of this literature. The course is open to all, though it is particularly recommended for students seriously intereste d in literature, classics, and medieval, Jewish, or Near Eastern studies. Weekly exercises, class presentations, mid-term and a final exam or paper. All texts will be read in translation. No Hebrew required.
