This course offers a historical and literary introduction to the writings of the earliest Christians. We will focus mostly on the New Testament, but we will also read non-canonical materials from the same time period (50-200ce). The course will emphasize the importance of the historical context of these writings and will investigate the ways these texts fit into ancient Mediterranean cultures. Students will learn how to do close readings of ancient texts, gain an understanding of the various me thods of scholarly biblical interpretation, and learn how to evaluate these interpretations critically.
Unless preregistered students attend the first class meeting or communicate directly with the instructor prior to the first class, they will be dropped from the class list. NOTE: Students must still submit a completed Drop/Add form to the Registrar's Office.
