Academic Year 2001/2002
Seminar on Consciousness Development
PSYC 367 SP
What is raised during consciousness-raising? The course will emphasize a social rather than individual definition of consciousness, i.e., the relation of individual development to historical development. Hence, in
discussing the lack of consciousness,
emphasis will be put on alientation rather than Freud's unconscious, or so-called altered states of consciousness. In other words, this is NOT a course for the study of drugs, yoga, etc. Material will be drawn from
autobiography, biography, oral
history, and psychological theory.
MAJOR READINGS
Will be tailored to individual students.
EXAMINATIONS AND ASSIGNMENTS
Students will be expected to analyze autobiographical/biographical material and make both oral and written presentations to the seminar. Also, they will be expected to carry out an oral history project and make a class
presentation on it. At least one
major paper required. Participation in a community service project will be expected.
ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS and/or COMMENTS
Unless preregistered students attend the course or otherwise give good cause to the instructor during the Red period of Drop/Add they will be subject to withdrawal from the course.
