The Psychology of Prejudice and Discrimination
PSYC 361 FA

This seminar will involve a psychological analysis of different forms of prejudice and discrimination, including racism, sexism, anti-Semitism, homophobia, and the abuse of animals. During the first part of the term, students will read about and discuss specific forms of prejudice and discrimination. In the second half of the course, they will write a final paper and present a brief address to humanity on a prejudice-related topic.

MAJOR READINGS

Within psychology, most readings will be drawn from the primary research literature. Outside psychology, students will read several book excerpts, magazine articles, and press clippings. The readings will be chosen so as to represent a variety of disciplines, research methods, and philosophical perspectives.

EXAMINATIONS AND ASSIGNMENTS

Students will be graded on class participation, weekly diary entries, a final paper, and a presentation to the class.

ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS and/or COMMENTS

Social Psychology (PSYC260) is a firm prerequisite. This course is in the study area of Social Psychology.

Unless preregistered students attend the first class meeting or communicate directly with the instructor prior to the first class, they will be dropped from the class list. NOTE: Students must still submit a completed Drop/Add form to the Registrar's Office.
