Seminar on Moral Development
PSYC 336 SP

This course will focus on issues surrounding morality from the following perspectives: philosophical (What is morality?), sociological (What is the relation between societal norm and moral norms?), anthropological (What is the role of culture in morality?), educational (How have educational philosophies incorporated moral theories?) and psychological (How do individuals evaluate social and moral considerations in complex situations? What is the relation between moral action and moral judgment?). While the readings and discussion will draw from different disciplines, the overall focus will pertain to psychological aspects of moral development.

MAJOR READINGS

Readings will include ETHICS by Frankena, CULTURE AND MORALITY by Hatch, THE DEVELOPMENT OF SOCIAL KNOWLEDGE: MORALITY AND CONVENTION by Turiel, DIMENSIONS OF TOLERANCE by McClosky and Brill, THE DEVELOPMENT OF MORAL JUDGEMENT by Piaget and MORAL EDUCATION by Durkheim.

EXAMINATIONS AND ASSIGNMENTS

Term paper, interview assignment and two oral presentations.
