Understanding Psychopathology

This course provides a survey of the major contemporary schools of psychopathology (biological, psychoanalytic, interpersonal, social, behavioral-cognitive). It familiarizes students with the current classification system (DSM IV) for psychiatric disorders. It will include a survey of some major psychiatric disorders and their causes and consequences. It will introduce students to basic approaches to assessment and treatment of individuals with psychopathology.

SECTION 01

This course provides a survey of historical and contemporary understandings of psychopathology (including biological, psychodynamic, cognitive, humanistic-existential and sociocultural models). Students will learn the current classification system (DSM IV) for psychiatric disorders and become familiar with theories of etiology and treatment for individual disorders. As students learn about models of classification of different psychiatric disorders they will also be encouraged to think critically about the concept of psychopathology, the prevalence of certain disorders and historical/cultural motivations for particular methods of diagnosing and treating psychopathology.

Major Readings

There will be an assigned text, 2/3 memoirs and supplemental readings. (Assignments may be subject to further revision).

Examinations and Assignments

Two exams, two written assignments.

This is a core coruse in Personality and Psychopathology Psychology.

Unless preregistered students attend the first class meeting or communicate directly with the instructor prior to the first class, they will be dropped from the class list. NOTE: Students must still submit a completed Drop/Add form to the Registrar's Office.
