Graceful Movement: How Skills Are Learned
PSYC 244 SP

How humans learn skilled movements will be examined to introduce the problems, methods, and facts of movement science. Human skill learning will be treated from a variety of perspectives including individual differences, optimizing learning, rehabilitation and ergonomics with relevance to students interested in the processes involved in the learning and teaching of athletic or artistic skills. There will be opportunities for projects involving video motion analysis and the learning and teach ing of skills.

MAJOR READINGS

MOTOR LEARNING AND PERFORMANCE, by Shmidt & Wrisberg, 1999. Additional material will be on reserve.

EXAMINATIONS AND ASSIGNMENTS

Two in-class examinations. One brief presentation of a journal article. Take home final examination.

ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS and/or COMMENTS

Students may elect to do an extra credit project in which they learn a new skill, keep a diary tracking the process, and perform the skill for the class.

Unless preregistered students attend the first class meeting or communicate directly with the instructor prior to the first class, they will be dropped from the class list. NOTE: Students must still submit a completed Drop/Add form to the Registrar's Office.
