Understanding Prejudice and Discrimination
PSYC 104 FA
This first-year initiative course will explore several different forms of prejudice and discrimination, including racism, sexism, antisemitism, homophobia, and the abuse of animals. During the first part of the term,
students will read about and discuss
specific forms of prejudice and discrimination. In the second half of the course, they will write a final paper and present a brief "address to humanity" on a prejudice-related topic.
MAJOR READINGS
Readings will be drawn from a variety of sources, including psychology journal articles, book excerpts, magazine articles, and press clippings. The readings will be chosen so as to represent a variety of disciplines,
research methods, and philosophical
perspectives.
EXAMINATIONS AND ASSIGNMENTS
Students will be graded on class participation, weekly diary entries, a final paper, and a presentation to the class.
ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS and/or COMMENTS
Students may take this course in their first year or Psyc361 in later years, but not both.
Unless preregistered students attend the first class meeting or communicate directly with the instructor prior to the first class, they will be dropped from the class list. NOTE: Students must still submit a completed
Drop/Add form to the Registrar's
Office.
