General Physics I
PHYS 113 FA

This course is the first term of a general physics course with calculus. The focus is on Newtonian mechanics and its ramifications. An objective of this course is to go beyond a conceptual understanding of the material and to develop the ability to achieve precise, quantitative solutions to examples illustrating the physics being studied.

EXAMINATIONS AND ASSIGNMENTS

Two hour exams, weekly quizzes, and a final exam. Weekly problem sets.

ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS and/or COMMENTS

A semester of calculus (in secondary school or college) is a prerequisite. Problem solving help sessions, run by undergraduate TAs, are provided weekly. The associated laboratory course, PHYS123, is optional but will aid in the understanding of the course material. An honors laboratory, PHYS125, is available for well-prepared and motivated students. Students planning to enter the health professions should be aware that a year of physics WITH LABORATORY is usually required for admission. Consult yo ur major adviser if you are in doubt about similar requirements in your field.
