South Indian Music--Solkattu
MUSC 439 SP

Southern Asia and Indian Ocean

A course in the rhythmic repertoire of South India using a system of vocables corresponding to drum strokes. An accelerated approach to the repertoire; students will receive an introduction to the fundamentals of tala and rhythmic composition. Advanced students will study a variety of compositions in a number of talas.

EXAMINATIONS AND ASSIGNMENTS

Regular practice of assignments. In-class midterm exam will cover written theory and performance. In-class final will emphasize performance.

ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS and/or COMMENTS

Strict attendance is compulsory.

Unless preregistered students attend the first class meeting or communicate directly with the instructor prior to the first class, they will be dropped from the class list. NOTE: Students must still submit a completed Drop/Add form to the Registrar's Office.
