Music of India: The Karnatak (South Indian) Tradition
MUSC 313 SP
This course will survey the principal performance genres, instruments, compositional and improvisational forms and theoretical structures of South Indian art music. Emphasis will be placed upon developing the ability to
listen sensitively and critically
to recorded and live performances and a corresponding familiarity with South Indian musical concepts and descriptive vocabulary. The social and religious context of this music will be examined, and, if possible, there
will be an opportunity to learn some
basic melodic and rhythmic skills through traditional performance exercises.
MAJOR READINGS
Bonnie C. Wade, MUSIC IN INDIA: THE CLASSICAL TRADITIONS Assorted articles, journals and reference works will be assigned as appropriate, not to exceed 30 pages per week. Sound recordings and videotapes will also
constitute important "texts."
EXAMINATIONS AND ASSIGNMENTS
Two hour exams, two short concert reviews (2-3 pages), one 10-12 page paper, final exam. Regular listening assignments of one to two hours per week. Attendance at a minimum of four concerts.
ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS and/or COMMENTS
No formal prerequisites; open to graduate and undergraduate students. Unless preregistered students attend the first class meeting or communicate directly with the instructor prior to the first class, they will be
dropped from the class list. NOTE:
Students must still submit a completed Drop/Add form to the Registrar's Office.
