Biological Spectroscopy
MB&B 371 SP

This course is designed to familiarize students with the spectroscopic techniques currently used to study the molecules that make up the living cell. The first part of the course will cover optical spectroscopy of proteins and nucleic acids. Among the optical techniques to be discussed are absorption, linear and circular dichroism, fluorescence, Fourier-transform infrared and Raman spectroscopy. The second part of the course will present the basic concepts and principles of nuclear magnetic resonance and electron paramagnetic resonance spectroscopy. Selected applications of optical and magnetic resonance spectroscopic methods in molecular biology and biochemistry will be presented.

Four homework assignments; paper presentation; one midterm exam; final exam.

Unless preregistered students attend the first class meeting or communicate directly with the instructor prior to the first class, they will be dropped from the class list. NOTE: Students must still submit a completed Drop/Add form to the Registrar's Office.
