Superbugs, supercells, and much more
MB&B 296 SP

This course will introduce the science behind the current genetic engineering revolution that has resulted in genetically modified foods and new ways of fighting diseases, among many other technological advances/changes. In the first few lectures, basic concepts of molecular biology and genetic engineering will be discussed to bring diverse students up to speed. Next, students will present research articles from journals such as SCIENCE, NATURE, PROCEEDINGS OF THE NATIONAL ACADEMY OF SCIENCES USA, etc. In class and through assignments, students will have the opportunity to critically analyze the scientific research, discuss its impact on society, and debate the ethics and future of this technology.

MAJOR READINGS

Selected articles from journals such as Science, Nature, Proceedings of the National Academy of Science, and popular science articles.

EXAMINATIONS AND ASSIGNMENTS

One class presentation, short writing assignments and one exam.

ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS and/or COMMENTS

Students with an interest in the biological and biochemical sciences who have enjoyed at least MB&B 205 and MB&B 206 or BIOL 205/206 are welcome.

Unless preregistered students attend the first class meeting or communicate directly with the instructor prior to the first class, they will be dropped from the class list. NOTE: Students must still submit a completed Drop/Add form to the Registrar's Office.
