Molecules, Microbes and Man
MB&B 104 SP

This course considers the relationship of microorganisms to the world around us and their particular role in causing diseases, including social diseases. The structures and life cycles of bacteria and viruses will be examined. Particular regard will be paid to the role of viruses in the causation of cancer. Immunological phenomena--how the body resists attack from foreign organisms--will be discussed, as well as the use of microorganisms in the study of basic biological problems. These include genetic engineering, regulation of cellular metabolism, and evolution.
