The Age of Nero

Nero--artist or monster (or both)? This course will focus on the personality and politics of the emperor and the reaction he evoked in contemporary and subsequent accounts of his reign. We will discuss the omnipresent theatricality of the period and the sense in many of the Neronian texts of a world falling apart: What strategies did the members of the Roman ruling classes adopt to cope with the insecurity and threats to their identity and spriritual integrity in Neronian Rome?
