This course includes close reading of modern literary texts, current events reporting in the media, and visual materials. The content and cultural contexts of the assignments will be examined through critical discussion in Japanese.

MAJOR READINGS

Representative works by a variety of modern authors, newspaper/magazine articles, videotapes of TV shows.

EXAMINATIONS AND ASSIGNMENTS

Oral presentations, written assignments, quizzes and exams.

ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS and/or COMMENTS

Placement test. Students should have completed JAPN218, or the equivalent. A year of study at the Associated Kyoto Program usually but not always prepares a student for this class. Regular attendance and participation are required. This course may be repeated by students who have already taken JAPN219 or JAPN220, as readings will be changed.

Unless preregistered students attend the first class meeting or communicate directly with the instructor prior to the first class, they will be dropped from the class list. NOTE: Students must still submit a completed Drop/Add form to the Registrar's Office.
