Gender Perspectives in Modern Italian Fiction and Film

This course is designed for the advanced student who needs practice in reading, writing, and discussion. It will explore the differing perspectives of male and female writers as shown in various shorter works of Italian fiction and nonfiction, principally from the 20th century. We will discuss the treatment of similar themes--love, marriage and sexual mores, war and Fascism, autobiography--by men and women and attempt to define what differences, if any, exist in their visions. We will also give some attention to films by such directors as Pietro Germi and Lina Wertmuller.

MAJOR READINGS

Short stories, essays and short novels by such writers as Ginzburg, Morante, Cardella, Verga, Moravia, Sciascia, and Pavese.

EXAMINATIONS AND ASSIGNMENTS

Six short papers; two hour exams; oral presentations.

ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS and/or COMMENTS

Unless preregistered students attend the first class meeting or communicate directly with the instructor prior to the first class, they will be dropped from the class list. NOTE: Students must still submit a completed Drop/Add form to the Registrar's Office.
