Postwar Italy in Fiction and Film: Views of Contemporary Italian Civilization

An introduction to Italian culture and society since 1945, this course combines films and readings that illustrate such themes as the impact of the Second World War on political, social, and economic life; the plight of
Italian Jews, and the changing
relations between the sexes. It includes texts by Sciascia, Calvino, Ginzburg and others; films by such directors as DeSica, Fellini and Rossellini.
MAJOR READINGS
Texts by: Bassani, Moravia, Calvino, Vigano and others.
Films by: DeSica, Fellini,Visconti and Germi.
EXAMINATIONS AND ASSIGNMENTS
Regular papers, oral reports and final examination.

Active participation in class. ONLY PLACEMENT TEST SCORES FROM THE CURRENT YEAR ARE ACCEPTABLE.
Unless preregistered students attend the first class meeting or communicate directly with the instructor prior to the first class, they will be dropped from the class list. NOTE: Students must still submit a completed
