This course will trace the development of the novella, or short story, from its origins in the 13th century through the modern period. Although the emphasis will be on recurrent themes (love, marriage, the roles of women, priests), some attention will be given to stylistic development and to the social and historical contexts that affected individual writers.
Unless preregistered students attend the first class meeting or communicate directly with the instructor prior to the first class, they will be dropped from the class list. NOTE: Students must still submit a completed Drop/Add form to the Registrar's Office.
