Academic Year 2001/2002
Comparative Emancipation
HIST 352 FA
We explore the unmaking of New World slavery during the 19th century. We begin with the slave revolt in Haiti and trace abolitionism through the British West Indies colonies, the American South, Cuba and Brazil. We then
turn to postemancipation
developments in these former slave societies. Our central concern is with the various roles played by slaves/freedpeople in these emancipatory processes. We shall, furthermore, attempt to excavate transnational currents
of freedom. Key questions include,
Who freed the slaves? What did freedom mean? What was emancipation's legacy?
