This seminar will encourage students to study all aspects of the lives of women in the medieval world (500-1500). We shall compare intellectuals' ideas about women to the social, economic and intellectual evidence of women's lives. Special attention will be paid to women in religious life; the difference that socioeconomic groupings made to a woman's freedom of action; the concept of the patriarchal household; and the varied roles of women in economic life.
Unless preregistered students attend the first class meeting or communicate directly with the instructor prior to the first class, they will be dropped from the class list. NOTE: Students must still submit a completed Drop/Add form to the Registrar's Office.
