Jews and Modernity: History and Historiography

Jewish and Israel Studies

This course will examine dilemmas and challenges Jews faced in modern times. We will read texts that focus on these challenges and Jewish responses to them, as well as various historical perspectives on this subject. The readings will include both primary and secondary sources. We will also view some films that address issues pertaining to the topic of the course.

T. Herzl, JEWISH STATE & OLD NEW LAND
S.R.Hirsch, THE NINETEEN LETTERS
S. Maimon, AN AUTOBIOGRAPHY
Primary sources related to Hasidism, Haskalah, Musar movement, etc.

EXAMINATIONS AND ASSIGNMENTS

One short paper based on a primary source & a research paper that will be an elaboration on the first paper.
