The Indian Ocean

Southern Asia and Indian Ocean

This lecture/discussion course surveys the history of Southern Asia and the Indian Ocean to about 1750. Topics to be examined include travel and exploration, religion and belief, land and sea-based technologies, social and cultural change, trade, and state formation. Readings will combine historical analysis with primary sources - including travel accounts, religious poetry, imperial chronicles, courtly drama, and popular literature.

EXAMINATIONS AND ASSIGNMENTS

The grade for the course will be based upon three papers of varying length, and mid-term and final.

Unless preregistered students attend the first class meeting or communicate directly with the instructor prior to the first class, they will be dropped from the class list. NOTE: Students must still submit a completed Drop/Add form to the Registrar's Office.
