Arab World in the 20th Century
HIST 234 SP

This course surveys history, colonialism, culture and religion of the contemporary Arabic-speaking countries. Emphasis is on current problems: women's rights, the Arab-Israeli conflict, Westernization versus Islam. The course will include discussion of two contemporary Arabic novels and two Arab films.

EXAMINATIONS AND ASSIGNMENTS

Midterm exam. Two 5 page papers on assigned topics. Take-home final exam.

Unless preregistered students attend the first class meeting or communicate directly with the instructor prior to the first class, they will be dropped from the class list. NOTE: Students must still submit a completed Drop/Add form to the Registrar's Office.
