From Balkan Peoples to Balkan Countries, 1804-1999
HIST 210 FA

This course examines the history of the Balkan people from their emergence into national consciousness early in the 19th-century, through the troubled formation of national cultures and national states, through two world wars and the decades of Communism, and into post-Communism and the Bosnia and Kosovo crises. The peoples covered are the South Slavs (especially Croats, Serbs and Bosnian Muslims), Albanians, Bulgarians, Romanians, and Greeks, along with nonterritorial peoples who lived among t hem like the Jews and the Gypsies. The subject matter ranges from sustaining national myths to economic and political development. Course materials include literature, travel reports, and films.

Unless preregistered students attend the first class meeting or communicate directly with the instructor prior to the first class, they will be dropped from the class list. NOTE: Students must still submit a completed Drop/Add form to the Registrar's Office.
