Gender and Society in Modern Europe, 1789 - Present
HIST 207 FA
This course explores the gendered experiences of women and men, representations of those experiences, and the implications of gender difference in Europe from the French Revolution to the present. Special emphasis is
paid to societal discussions of
"woman" and her "place" as well as legal, economic, and social changes in European women's lives. Topics include the construction of public and private spheres; the family; sexuality; masculinity; work; industrialism and
urbanization; the role of the stat
e; imperialism; consumption; feminisms; the two world wars; fascism; the Cold War; the "sexual revolution"; and the New Europe.
