This course focuses on two ancient Greek Ions and one modern figure: (1) the mythological ancestor of the Ionic people and the hero of Euripides' ION, and (2) the fictional rhapsode whose sources of poetic inspiration are examined by Socrates in Plato's ION; (3) the heroine of MTV's AEON FLUX. Class discussion will center on (1) Athenian foundation myths, the heiress in Athenian law and society, and the portrayal of action and character in Euripides' play; (2) rhapsodies and recitation in Athens, theories of oral composition, poetry and poetic inspiration in Plato; (3) modern myths and moral ambiguity.
Unless preregistered students attend the first class meeting or communicate directly with the instructor prior to the first class, they will be dropped from the class list. NOTE: Students must still submit a completed Drop/Add form to the Registrar's Office.
