Comparative Politics of Western Europe
GOVT 284 SP

This course explores the institutions and contemporary politics of the major West European states, including Great Britain, France, Germany, Italy, and Spain. We will focus on the unique political development of each country as we address broader thematic issues: regionalism and devolution; nationalism and the radical right; the welfare state; and migration. The course also examines the most significant transformation in Western Europe since the end of WWII: the creation European Union.

EXAMINATIONS AND ASSIGNMENTS

Twelve Pop Quizzes (20%), Two five-page papers (25% each), and a journal of newspaper articles (30%).

Unless preregistered students attend the first class meeting or communicate directly with the instructor prior to the first class, they will be dropped from the class list. NOTE: Students must still submit a completed Drop/Add form to the Registrar's Office.
