Academic Year 2001/2002
Policy Analysis: A Quantitative Approach
GOVT 204 FA
This course has two goals. One is to introduce both the formal logic and techniques of social science research and political analysis. The coverage of quantitative techniques includes sampling theory, statistical
inference, the logic of hypothesis
testing, and regression. A second goal is to introduce students to the logic of policy evaluation and some important tools of analysis (e.g., cost-benefit and cost-effectiveness analysis). Thus, the course serves as an
introduction to both statistics and
to public policy analysis.
MAJOR READINGS
At least two texts in statistics and policy analysis and articles employing a variety of quantitative techniques and approaches to policy evaluation.
EXAMINATIONS AND ASSIGNMENTS
Exams, presentations, and exercises
ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS and/or COMMENTS
No knowledge of calculus is assumed. This course is strongly recommended for Government majors, particularly those in the American Politics and Public Policy concentration. Ideally, it should be taken in the sophomore
year, because its lesson can be
applied in many upper-level courses.
