German Opera from the Enlightenment Through the Weimar Republic
GERM 290 SP
The course will concentrate on representative German operas from the 1760s to 1933. The emphasis will be on works of Mozart, Wagner, and the earlier 20th-century and their links to the historical moments and places in
which they were created. Although
occasional readings (such as Wagner's OPERA AND DRAMA) will be required, this will be almost entirely a listening and viewing course.

Three papers, three oral presentations, and a final examination.

Students should have some background in and enthusiasm for the Western Art Music of the nineteenth and early twentieth century.
