Fassbinder & Sirk: Limitations of Life
GERM 254 FA

Crosslistings:
FILM 254

The relationship between Hollywood and Germany has always been both uneasy and productive. This course will examine the well-known interaction between the master of the postwar melodrama and the enfant terrible of the New German Cinema. Initially, we will follow the lead of Fassbinder's famous essay, "Imitation of Life: On the Films of Douglas Sirk," and consider the films that ostensibly influenced the young German director most immediately. Special focus will be on FEAR EATS THE SOUL, Fassbinder's provocative remake of ALL THAT HEAVEN ALLOWS. We will, however, also look at some of Fassbinder's important films before his encounter with Sirk as well as some of Sirk's German films.

MAJOR READINGS

Rainer Werner Fassbinder, LOVE IS COLDER THAN DEATH, EFFI BRIEST, THE MERCHANT OF FOUR SEASONS, FEAR EATS THE SOUL, THE MARRIAGE OF MARIA BRAUN, LOLA, LILI MARLEEN, VERONICA VOSS Douglas Sirk, ALL THAT HEAVEN ALLOWS, WRITTEN ON THE WIND, INTERLUDE, THE TARNISHED ANGELS, A TIME TO LOVE AND A TIME TO DIE, IMITATION OF LIFE
