German for Reading Knowledge
GERM 104 SP
This course is designed specifically for graduate and undergraduate students who wish to acquire proficiency in reading German texts without taking the time to master speaking and writing. Emphasis on recognition of
grammatical constructions, idioms and
vocabulary. Readings of general interest will be supplemented by materials from the areas in which the course participants specialize. This course offers excellent preparation for graduate students required to pass a
reading examination in German and
for undergraduates planning to write senior theses or essays on topics that involve texts written in German.
MAJOR READINGS
A basic grammar text.
Excerpts from newspapers, magazines, scholarly journals.
EXAMINATIONS AND ASSIGNMENTS
Frequent exercises, quizzes, translations.
A final project.
ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS and/or COMMENTS
This course is also open to graduate students. Meeting time may be rescheduled according to participants' needs. Interview with instructor highly recommended.
