The French Fable: La Fontaine, Pre- and Post-
FREN 242 SP
The course will study primarily the Fables of La Fontaine but will also follow the development of the verse fable among his predecessors and successors, from the Middle Ages to the present. Special emphasis will be
given to the 17th and 18th centuries.
MAJOR READINGS
La Fontaine, FABLES, Books I-XII (selections). Fables of Furetiere, Boursault, Florian, Houdard de la Motte, Dorat, Piron, Arnault, Anouilh, Guillevic, and others. Shapiro, N., FABLES FROM OLD FRENCH (in original,
with translations). Selected
theoretical texts.
EXAMINATIONS AND ASSIGNMENTS
Student explications in class; One short comparative essay (La Fontaine and another fabalist); one final paper.
ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS and/or COMMENTS
Students should have taken a French literature course (here or elsewhere) and/or should be familiar with the principles of French prosody. Unless preregistered students attend the first class meeting or communicate
directly with the instructor prior
to the first class, they will be dropped from the class list. NOTE: Students must still submit a completed Drop/Add form to the Registrar's Office.
