This is a course on comparative narratives and stylistic analysis that focuses on films from Hong Kong, Taiwan, and Japan made in the last twenty years. The films of Tsui Hark, Wong Kar-Wai, Edward Yang, Hou Hsiao-Hsien, Kitano Takeshi, and others will be examined, along with issues relating to genre, the regional film industry, the international festival circuit, and popular cinema. Please note that although Hong Kong martial arts and action films will be discussed, they are not the primary focus of this course.
Unless preregistered students attend the first class meeting or communicate directly with the instructor prior to the first class, they will be dropped from the class list. NOTE: Students must still submit a completed
Drop/Add form to the Registrar's
Office.
